Official Cash Rate
The Reserve Bank has left the Official Cash Rate (OCR) at 2.5% due to the slow pace of NZ’s economic recovery, the time needed to rebuild Christchurch after a series of earthquakes, continuing concerns over the debts of European countries, and the continuing recession in USA. The OCR is reviewed regularly and sets a benchmark for mortgage and other lending rates.

Changes to Financial Reporting for SME’s
On 14 Sept 2011 the Minister of Commerce announced changes to the financial reporting framework. Amongst the proposed changes is that small and medium sized private companies will no longer have to prepare statutory general purpose financial reports. This is expected to be introduced in mid 2013. As a result of the proposals NZICA, IRD and the new External Reporting Board (XRB) will research new requirements for financial reporting by SME companies.

LAQC/QC Changes
The removal of LAQC rules came into effect on 1 April 2011 so they can no longer attribute losses to the shareholders. At the same time the new Look Through Company (LTC) has been introduced. There is a 2 year transitional period available for an LAQC / QC to transition to another structure depending on your circumstances. Election forms to transition to an LTC needs to be signed by all shareholders. Existing LAQC’s may transition to another type of tax structure e.g partnership, sole trader, within specified timeframes. Professional advice is recommended before acting.

A review of your circumstances including future plans is highly recommended, particularly if you are in business, invest in rental properties or both, or have changes to personal income circumstances. Contact us early for an appointment to discuss your situation and your options.
